Cape Town’s Hidden Histories: The Stories Behind the Buildings

Begin at Honest Chocolate, where a historic building that once served as a funeral home now has a very different life as a bean-to-bar chocolate café. If you’d like, pick up a coffee to enjoy as you walk.

From there, follow Wale and Bree Streets, stopping to uncover the stories behind an 18th-century home associated with Jan de Waal, a heritage square that narrowly escaped becoming a massive parking garage, and The Barracks, a remarkable building that has served as a warehouse, place of worship, military and medical facility, and now a lively mixed-use space.

Continue to the Martin Melck House and Lutheran Church, where stories of religious freedom, patronage, and slavery reveal some of the contradictions woven into Cape Town’s past.

Then, continue towards De Waterkant.
